Access medicinal cannabis safely, legally and with pharmacist support.

Milawa Pharmacy dispenses prescription medical cannabis for patients across Milawa, Wangaratta, Myrtleford, Bright, Wodonga, Albury and beyond. We work with authorised prescribers to make the process clear, private and clinically supported — alongside our everyday pharmacy services, online prescription requests and same-day local delivery.

How it works

From prescription to pharmacy

Accessing medical cannabis in Australia is a regulated, prescription-only pathway. Here's what the journey looks like from your first appointment to your first dispensed product.

See an authorised prescriber

Medical cannabis requires a prescription from a doctor with TGA authority or via the Special Access Scheme. Your regular GP or a cannabis clinic can assess eligibility.

Prescription & approval

Once approved, the prescription is sent to us. We check the product, dose, and any interactions with your other medicines before we dispense.

Dispensed by our pharmacy

We order the product from a licensed supplier, verify the script, and contact you when it's ready for collection or local delivery.

Ongoing support

We follow up on dosing, side effects, and monitoring. Repeat scripts can be managed through your prescriber and sent to us in advance.

Eligibility

Is medicinal cannabis right for you?

Only a doctor can decide whether medical cannabis is appropriate. It is usually considered when conventional treatments have not been effective or cause unacceptable side effects.

  • Chronic pain
  • Anxiety and PTSD
  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Chemotherapy-related nausea
  • Palliative care symptoms
  • Sleep disorders
  • Neuropathic pain

Important safety note

Medical cannabis is not a first-line treatment. It can interact with other medicines and is not suitable for everyone, including people with a history of certain psychiatric conditions or cardiovascular disease. Your prescriber will review your full medical history.

Driving while impaired by cannabis is illegal in Victoria. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel sedated or affected by your medication.

Costs & access

What to expect to pay

Medicinal cannabis is mostly a private prescription in Australia. We are transparent about dispensing costs and can give you an estimate before we order your product.

PBS subsidy

Most medicinal cannabis products are not currently listed on the PBS. Patients usually pay the full private cost.

Product cost

Prices vary by product, strength and dose. Typical monthly costs range from roughly $150–$400, depending on the prescription.

Consultation fees

Initial cannabis assessments and follow-up appointments with authorised prescribers are billed privately by the clinic.

Dispensing fee

We charge a standard dispensing fee like any other prescription. We can quote this before you order.

Common questions

Medical cannabis FAQs

Answers to the questions patients ask us most about access, prescriptions, costs and the law.

Do I need a prescription for medical cannabis?

Yes. Medicinal cannabis is a prescription-only medicine in Australia. You must be assessed by a doctor who is authorised to prescribe it through the TGA.

Can I just buy CBD oil over the counter?

No. Low-dose CBD products still require a prescription from a doctor or pharmacist prescriber. Over-the-counter CBD is not legally available in Australia without a prescription.

What conditions can medical cannabis be prescribed for?

Common indications include chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, chemotherapy-related nausea and neuropathic pain. Your prescriber decides whether it is appropriate for your situation.

How long does it take to get approval?

For most patients, the prescriber submits a TGA approval online and a response is often received within a few days. Some products require extra approval steps, which can add time.

Can you deliver medical cannabis?

Yes. Once dispensed, we can arrange local same-day delivery in our coverage area or tracked Australia-wide shipping, following all legal packaging and transport requirements.

Will my regular GP prescribe it?

Some GPs are authorised prescribers and comfortable prescribing cannabis. Others may refer you to a dedicated cannabis clinic. We can point you toward authorised prescribers in the area if needed.
